Video Tutorial: Boxy Cosmetic Bag

Standard

OK, guys! I have finally made a few video tutorials and will be posting them as they’re ready. This video shows how to make a boxy cosmetic bag. Please let me know what you think of the video. It was my first time doing this, so it’s not super-duper awesome, but I’m still really happy with it.

The materials you will need for this project:

  • 2 fat quarters of fabric: cotton is easiest to sew but you can use whatever you like. I used cotton for the outside of this bag and vinyl for the inside
  • batting: optional. Makes the bag nice and thick so that it can get knocked around a bit without breaking the stuff inside
  • d-ring: one or two. D-rings give the bag more utility so that you can hang it up or attach it to the inside of a larger bag.
  • obviously, you’ll need a sewing machine and some thread.

The fabrics/materials I used:

  • Fabric: No clue. I picked up both of the fabrics from a thrift store and have no idea as to their origins. However, I am in LOVE with the brown fabric that I used in the tutorial. At first I bought it simply because it was $1.00 for like a bajillion yards, but I didn’t really like it. But once I started using it, I realized that it looks better as a finished product than in it’s boring, basic, yard-y form. Now its one of my favorite fabrics! (P.S. if you recognize the fabric, please tell me what it is so that I can find more 🙂 ).
  •  I used a 16″ brown (nude, if you want to get picky) invisible zipper.
  •  I picked up the d-rings from Walmart.

I will be selling bags like these at the Farmers Market this summer, so if you like the bag but don’t want to make your own, you should stop in and see me! Or, take a look at my Etsy shop. 🙂

And now, without further ado:

Etsy store finally updated – go take a look!

Standard

So I FINALLY updated the photos in my Esty shop, and added a few new items. The baby blankies are still missing, but I’m not to worried – I think they will sell at the Farmers Market. Here’s some of the updated photos:

Striped Tote Bag - has pink polka dots on the inside

I have quite a few bag styles in this pattern

See that beautiful straight seam? 🙂

Such a fun and sweet little summer dress!

I’m glad I finally did it. I’ve been meaning to, but I feel like my brain has been muddled because I have so many darn choices to make. I couldn’t decide where to sell, what to sell, what to keep for Farmers Market, etc. etc. etc.. So today I just made some choices:

  1. I pulled my bags out of the local shop I have been selling my bags at. They aren’t selling, and I will get a shit ton more exposure at the Farmers Market. Plus, while I would love to have my stuff all over town, I’d like to sell in places that I’m genuinely excited to work with. While I loved the place before, once I converted from a customer to a vendor, my experience just wasn’t the same. I don’t want to get burnt out on crafting because of strained relationships with owners!
  2. Updated the shop – already said this but it was a big thing for me because I made the decision to keep selling online. I have been a little dispirited because I haven’t made hardly any sales online. Deep down I know it’s because I need to push my product, not just let it sit there and hope that someone finds it. I need to actively promote my items. TSE is my baby and I want it to grow and flutter out of the nest.
  3. I decided to keep freelancing. For awhile I considered quitting so I could craft full-time. Then I realized that I really don’t work much anyways, and that I LOVE the clients I have. I don’t think I really wanted to quit; I was just stuck in a rut, and was clamoring to get out of it. I’m glad I decided to keep freelancing because I have picked up a couple new clients this week (unplanned clients, but hey), and they will keep me busy throughout the summer.

So! If you are interested, please check out my Esty store and tell me what you think. I wish I had a better camera – the pictures seem a little crappy to me, but at least I have my stuff up there. If you decide to buy something, use the coupon code SUNSHINE to get 15% off until…whenever I decide. Probably until the beginning of June. I always offer free shipping, so there’s no surprises with the price. You pay what you see on the listing (and 15% less if you take advantage of my coupon), not a penny more.

I also LOVE custom orders. If you see something you like, but want a different color, or a longer/shorter zipper, just let me know. I usually have a hodge podge of fabric laying around that’s just begging to be used. 🙂

Do you have an Etsy store? If so, leave a link to it in the comments below; I’d love to see the beautiful things you create!

Baby Blankie Winner Reveal

Standard

Alright! The winner for the baby blankie has been chosen: Lisa, a.k.a. alittleteteatete, was the lucky winner! I checked out her blog that she runs with her sister, and it’s pretty cool. They blog about fashion, beauty, and food.

Thanks to everyone who participated! I’m looking to do more of these in the future!

A peek at what’s coming soon

Standard

I’ve made quite a few bags this past week but haven’t taken any photos yet. I do have a sneak peek at what I’ve been working on, though:

They aren’t difficult but do take some time to make. I think that they are the perfect addition to these corduroy bags!

I promise to get more photos in soon! Also, a  giveaway is coming up, as soon as I figure out what the amazing prize is going to be!

Local Sales Are a Go

Standard

Great great great great news! I will now be selling some of my product in a local Bozeman store called “The Beatnik”. It’s a fun – and gigantic – store filled with local artists’ stuff. I’m pretty excited to be part of the team. 🙂

I’ll still be selling online using my Etsy Store for those of you that aren’t in the Bozeman area.

On a separate note, I’m thinking of doing a giveaway or something, to keep you all interested. Some free fabric or a bag/blankie…something! What would you like to win? Comment below and I’ll decide here when I get enough opinions.

News Update!

Standard

A couple of things:

1. On accident, I made a new style of bag that I had never made before! Instead of being short and squat, they are now tall and thin. I’m okay with this because I think they look more elegant and dainty, which is exactly what a cosmetic bag should be, right?

2. I’ve talked to a couple of store owners in downtown Bozeman, and if all goes well, I will be able to sell my bags locally! I’M SO EXCITED! Nothing is for sure yet, but I’m going to dream big and hope that my products are cool enough for people to sell.

I’ll post pictures of the new bag styles by the end of the weekend.
